Bounds on the Extinction Time Distribution of a Branching Process

چکیده
The class of fractional linear generating functions, one of the few known classes of probability generating functions whose iterates can be explicitly stated, is examined. The method of bounding a probability generating function g (satisfying g"(1)< oo) by two fractional linear generating functions is used to derive bounds for the extinction time distribution of the Galton-Watson branching process with offspring probability distribution represented by g. For the special case of the Poisson probability generating function, the best possible bounding fractional linear generating functions are obtained, and the bounds for the expected time to extinction of the corresponding Poisson branching process are better than any previously published. Extinction in a branching process: Why some of the fittest strategies cannot guarantee survival
The fitness of a biological strategy is typically measured by its expected reproductive rate, the first moment of its offspring distribution. However, strategies with high expected rates can also have high probabilities of extinction. A similar situation is found in gambling and investment, where strategies with a high expected payoff can also have a high risk of ruin. We take inspiration from ...
متن کاملIdentifiability of Age-Dependent Branching Processes from Extinction Probabilities and Number Distributions
Consider an age-dependent, single-species branching process defined by a progeny number distribution, and a lifetime distribution associated with each independent particle. In this paper, we focus on the associated inverse problem where one wishes to formally solve for the progeny number distribution or the lifetime distribution that defines the Bellman-Harris branching process. We derive resul...
متن کاملA Curious Connection Between Branching Processes and Optimal Stopping
A curious connection exists between the theory of optimal stopping for independent random variables, and branching processes. In particular, for the branching process Zn with o spring distribution Y , there exists a random variable X such that the probability P (Zn = 0) of extinction of the nth generation in the branching process equals the value obtained by optimally stopping the sequence X1; ...
متن کاملExtinction times in Multitype Markov Branching Processes
In this paper, a distributional approximation to the time to extinction in a subcritical continuous-time Markov branching process is derived. A limit theorem for this distribution is established and the error in the approximation is quantified. The accuracy of the approximation is illustrated in an epidemiological example. Since Markov branching processes serve as approximations to nonlinear ep...
متن کاملCritical Age Dependent Branching Markov Processes and Their Scaling Limits
This paper studies: (i) the long time behaviour of the empirical distribution of age and normalised position of an age dependent critical branching Markov process conditioned on non-extinction; and (ii) the super-process limit of a sequence of age dependent critical branching Brownian motions.
